Background of this "article"

This article was originally published as a printed article in The Reading Teacher (see Volume 50, No. 8, pp. 626-643). It was originally written and published to simulate some of the characteristics of an electronic hypertext in printed form. It is being republished here as an electronic document in Reading Online, having been reviewed by that electronic journal's editorial advisory board. The present electronic article is an adaption of the original printed version in that it is a real, not a simulated, hypertext. However, even though it has been adapted for presentation as a hypertext, it is not as much a hypertext as it might have been had it been created from the outset exclusively as a hypertext.
