Advice on reading this "article"
You can read this document essentially as a conventional linear text if you wish. It was originally published as an article in a printed journal, although it was meant to simulate some of the characteristics of an electronic hypertext even in its printed form. So, it is not inconceivable for a reader to take a more or less direct path through the text. However, even the most linear of readers is likely to at least occasionally digress off of the main path of the text. The blue words indicate linked items that invite the reader to follow them, and most readers will at least occasionally be curious about where they lead. I've attempted to make it relatively easy to return to the main text after a digression, since I anticipate that most readers will prefer the security of a linear path. In fact, this document isn't as hypertextual as it might be because it was originally written as a version to published in print. So, experienced readers of hypertext or other adventuresome readers will not have as many opportunities to experience the unmitigated freedom of hypertext in reading this document.
