Bookmark Strategy
This strategy (adapted from Crafton, 1991) can be used to encourage students to read and interact with the text on their own. I distribute bookmarks -- strips of paper about 2 inches wide and 8 inches long (appx. 5 cm by 20 cm). Students are invited to identify their struggles with the text by noting difficult words and passages and recording questions they encounter as they read. Students share their bookmark discoveries in small groups and later in a community share with the rest of the class. Finally, I collect the bookmarks and record them as a response in my grade book.
