Writing

Students own the memorable lines when they select a passage and write about it. Students may choose to write about what the passage means or how the lines reflect events in their own lives. Some students elect to take their passage home and become owners of a "bit of the Bard." Parents tell me that months later, the lines are still displayed on the refrigerator or a bedroom wall.

Students can also try their hand at writing sonnets. We use sonnet 18, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day...," to write a parody, sonnet-style. Students dissect the original to the bones and attempt to imitate the 14-line form with the final couplet at the end. The results are hilarious.
