On Browsers, Paths, and Compatibilities

The path-based version of the article requires a Javascript-enabled browser that supports frames (critical); it is optimized for 800 x 600 video resolution (not critical). If you use Netscape 4.X, you can set up your browser to run Javascript by pulling down the Edit menu, selecting “Preferences,” and then, under the “Advanced” category, clicking beside “Enable Javascript” to ensure that there is a checkmark in the box. This path-based version of the article has been tested on versions of Navigator back to 3.01 on both PCs and Macs and appears to run as long as the browser settings are appropriate, although it may behave differently depending on your platform, operating system, or version of the browser software.

Unfortunately, it does not work quite as well with versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer prior to 4.0. If you use IE 4.X or 5.X, everything should be fine, as long as you have selected the appropriate settings to enable Java under your “Preferences.” If you are using anything before IE 4.0, however, you may get error messages when your browser loads the path-based version.

If you are using a pre-3.01 version of Navigator or a pre-4.0 version of Explorer, I recommend that you take a few minutes to update your browser. You can download a free copy of the current Netscape release at the Netscape download site; the current IE release can be downloaded at the Microsoft download site. If you are using any other browser (Opera, AOL, etc.) and experience problems, send me a note and I'll see what I can do to get you up and running.
