Conclusion Strategies: Giving Advice

Description

The author concludes by offering the reader some advice or a possible solution to the problem described in the report.

Published Example

From T.J. Murphy’s “Playing a Brain” in the March 2000 issue of Boys’ Life magazine:

Thomas realizes life is too short to be unhappy. His advice: “Make the most of it, and go right ahead and do your stuff.”

Discussion

Here the author provides an opinion based on information in the report. It may be a recommendation, a forewarning, a lesson, a word of encouragement, or some guidance. In any case, the author takes the reader beyond the text by offering a subjective opinion as a way to provide closure.

Mary and Barbara’s Example

How our own report might have ended if we’d used this strategy:

There are definitely two sides to the debate about increasing the number of wolves in certain sections of the country. We suggest that biologists and others who are involved in this endeavor move slowly, continue to keep careful records, and make the data available to all sides for future decisions.
