Conclusion Strategies: Providing a Summary

Description

The author briefly reviews the key points in the report. The conclusion revisits, in a new way, the purpose of the report by emphasizing the importance of the points raised.

Published Example

From K. Uretsky’s “When the Earth Explodes” in the September 1999 issue of Cricket magazine:

As you can see, volcanoes are not all bad. They might be scary to watch and frightening to hear, but the paths of destruction they carve are often followed by new life and abundant growth.

Discussion

The writer provides closure by drawing the reader’s attention back to the original intent of the report, confirming in one or two sentences what was learned about the topic.

Student Example

Anjali’s report focused on the day-to-day life of the hippopotamus. She concluded with “It may seem like all the hippo does is stay in the water all day, but as you see it does have a rather exciting life.”
