Leads Strategies: Question

Description

The author begins the report by posing a thought-provoking question.

Published Example

From “View From the Crow’s Nest: American Architecture” in the August 1988 issue of Cobblestone magazine:

Do you ever wonder when you look at buildings in your own town or city, as well as those in other parts of the United States and in other countries, about the amount of work involved in their construction?

Discussion

In order to engage the reader, the author poses an interesting, open-ended question. This question serves two purposes: it introduces the topic and encourages the reader to read on to discover the answer.

Student Examples

From Kyle’s report on the telephone:

Have you ever wondered how you talk to your best friend or a family member just by picking up something called a phone and dialing seven numbers?

From Mai’s report on Beethoven:

Have you ever heard of the composer that was deaf?
