Survey question 15: Are your students graded on their SSR participation?
Responses of those who answered yes:
- We have incorporated SSR into the reading program. We use 10 minutes of each reading class. The students are required to read an assigned book for each quarter and are evaluated on it. It makes them accountable. If they complete the assigned book, they may read a book of their choice on the present theme, and it was counted as extra credit toward their quarter grade. Works real well.
- I make anecdotal notations and also check a reading chart they keep of what they're reading.
- Conferencing and daily journaling is utilized. Journal for SSR requires short summary and personal response.
- I check periodically to see what students are reading, observe how they spend their time during SSR. These observations are included in an 'independent reading grade.'
- In order to value reading, students must be graded on the art of reading. Students receive grades for participation and response journals that also include a log.
- This is a part of the grading sheet each student receives during each theme. It can also be extra credit if a book report is submitted.
- Oral report presented to other class members.
- I do require it as daily participation.
- Short book reports are used as extra credit towards quarterly grades.
- I count coming to class with a book to read as a homework assignment.
- They have to hand in a book report.
- I want them to read what they like to read. The only grade is for not reading.
Responses of those who answered no:
- We do not want this to be graded so that it can be recreational as well as informative.
- If a grade is given, it defeats the purpose of encouraging students to become lifelong readers.
- Asked to share their reading experiences with other students.
- They are monitored closely to see that they do participate. Ultimately some form of reporting on what has been read is required.
- I tell them that it's recreational. I want them to love to read as much as I do.
- That interferes with enjoyment.
