How to Join Online Communities and Manage Your Subscription
Our Online Communities offer readers, authors, and editors a chance to discuss articles and features published in Reading Online and to share their ideas and comments about literacy, instruction, and technology with colleagues around the world. This department now features ROL Communities, a listserv facilitated by Gary Moorman (details about joining and managing your subscription appear below). In coming months, other forms of communication (threaded discussion forums, for example) will be offered.

How to Post a Message to ROL Communities
- Subscribe to ROL Communities (see above). You must have subscribed before the listserv software will permit you to post a message.
- Address your message to the posting address for ROL Communities:
ROLCOMMUNITIES@bookmark.reading.org
- Provide a descriptive topic. This is helpful for people to decide if they are interested in reading your message. It is also helpful for people doing searches in the archives (see below).
- Type your message. The culture of this list is supportive. Please try to keep this in mind as you compose your message.
- Send your message.
The ROL Communities Archives
If you are interested in viewing previous conversations on this list, please visit our archives. (You need not be a member to view these archives.) The archives contain a list of all messages sent to ROL Communities each week. You may also search the archives by key word, topic, or author. This is often helpful to find important information about a particular topic that interests you.
Too Many Messages?
If the volume of ROL Communities messages becomes a problem, you can set your subscription to digest mode. This means that you will receive a daily digest containing all of the postings from that day within a single e-mail message. If you decide to use digest mode, please be certain you provide an accurate subject description for any replies to the list. This helps all of us make decisions about what to read.
To Set Digest Mode
- Send an e-mail message to our administrative address:
listserv@bookmark.reading.org
The message should read:
SET ROLCOMMUNITIES DIGEST
- Be certain to disable your e-mail signature, if you have one. There should be nothing in your message except the command above.
To Return to Regular Mail Mode
- To return your ROL Communities subscription from digest mode to the regular mail mode, send an e-mail message to our administrative address:
listserv@bookmark.reading.org
The message should read:
SET ROLCOMMUNITIES MAIL
- Be certain to disable the signature, if you have one. There should be nothing in your message except the command above.
See which way you prefer to receive your messages. You may change back and forth at any time. And if you need assistance, just send a message to rol@reading.org
