Tim quotes a quote from me that appeared in Education Week but there is a fuller context that is missing. My comments in the Ed Week article were on the unlikely prospect of the NRP issuing a report by the Fall of 1999, which was the original target, especially given the limited staffing, etc. G. reid Lyon reponded that I obviously wasn't familiar with how such reports were generated at NICHD and he forsaw no problems in meeting the original dedaline. In the Fall of 1998 the NRP requested another a year to complete their work. And now the date of release is being extended further. My comments were not critical of the Panel nor the Panel members but rather of the original planning. Since those comments were made the planning process changed -- good news. But I'm still waiting for Dr. Lyon to call with an apology for his criticisms of my "awareness" of how NICHD works.
