Effective Literacy Instruction: Two Reports from the National Reading Conference

Bridget Dalton

In the United States, the report of the National Reading Panel has become an important source of information about scientifically based literacy instruction. Recognizing that there is much to be learned from research reflecting a variety of research traditions and on topics not addressed by the report, the National Reading Conference commissioned two papers, one focusing on beginning reading instruction and the other on adolescent literacy. These papers, named and linked below, expand the conversation about what we know and how we know it. Together, these three reports should assist educators in making informed decisions about what is needed to improve the quality of literacy instruction for all children.
