This chapter describes the development and use of electronic reading environments designed to provide at-risk readers with "supported text" text which has been transformed by inserting various types of embedded resources. It outlines and illustrates the major components of supported text, provides examples of electronic books containing supported text, discusses conclusions drawn from our experiences creating and using supported text with at-risk readers, and presents a theory of electronic reading.
