Anderson-Inman, L., Horney, M.A., Chen, D., & Lewin, L. (1994, April). Hypertext literacy: Observations from the ElectroText Project. Language Arts, 71(4), 37-45.
The ElectroText Project developed hypertext versions of several short stories, such as "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl (1978), often used in a middle school language arts classes. These electronic stories were enhanced with resources designed to assist students' comprehension and to promote active reading skills. Six distinct hypertext reading patterns were identified, which vary on the tendency for students to interact with the hypertext materials and on how they integrate the use of the resources into their reading. These patterns suggest that (a) students must have knowledge of the document's structure; (b) readers must engage the text and its various enhancements with a purpose; and (c) learning from hypertext documents requires a multiphasic approach to reading.
