Horney, M.A., & Anderson-Inman, L. (1994). The ElectroText Project: Hypertext reading patterns of middle school students. Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 3(1), 71-91.
This paper reports a descriptive study involving 17 middle school students who read hypertext versions of two short stories. In addition to the text of the stories themselves, the electronic stories included vocabulary support, prompted writing assignments, and self-monitoring questions. A detailed analysis of students' moment-by-moment interaction with the stories showed that while students were able to read and comprehend in this electronic environment, they did not naturally make full use of the available resources. This suggests the need for explicit instruction in "hypertext literacy."
