Horney, M.A., & Anderson-Inman, L. (in press). Supported text in electronic reading environments. Reading and Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties.

This paper presents results from Project LITERACY-HI, which created and studied the use of electronic textbook chapters designed for students with hearing impairments. Results suggest that students (a) can and do take advantage of the resources available; (b) develop specific and consistent patterns of resource usage; (c) do not interact with all document pages in the same way; (d) can use electronic documents to accomplish school tasks; and (e) use the supportive resources in ways that suggest they are "studying." These findings point to a subtle distinction between "reading" and "studying" and suggest that electronic reading environments are best used in learning tasks requiring the latter.
