Activity 1: Truths about Truth

Overview
Use library or Internet research tools to find word meanings for concepts related to the idea of truth and to search for a meaningful quotation about truth; interview two people about their understanding of these concepts.

Step 1: Find word meanings
Select two words from the list below and look them up in two different dictionaries. On the back of this page, list the words you selected and write down the definitions provided in the dictionary. Be prepared to discuss the similarities and differences between the definitions.

truth realism honesty
objectivity accuracy authenticity
reality falsehood credibility

Step 2: Find a meaningful quotation
Use Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations or other library resources to select a quotation that uses one of the words you researched.

Step 3: Interview
Ask two people to explain the meanings of the two words you looked up. Ask “What does this word mean to you?” On the back of this paper, write down what they say and select the two sentences that best represent their ideas. What are the similarities and differences between how people talk about these concepts and the dictionary meanings?
