Web Watch:
Just Think

Julia Michaels

For students interested in how mass media affects their lives, or for teachers interested in enhancing their students’ media literacy, Just Think offers an ideal introductory source for up-to-date information and educational material.

Students, particularly those with an interest in filmmaking or other creative endeavors, will find inspiration in the Youth Media section, which showcases films and websites created by young people to enhance the media literacy of their peers. Teachers, meanwhile, can order ready-made curriculum packages, which can help them easily introduce middle school and high school students to basic media literacy concepts in a variety of innovative ways. The site also features a wonderful Resources section, which contains links to a variety of alternative media sources for all ages. All in all, this site makes a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the mass media that bombards us every day.

Editors’ note: As a literature tie-in for a classroom media literacy study, consider Feed by M.T. Anderson, selected for the American Library Association’s 2003 list of Best Books for Young Adults. For a review by Julia Michaels, see The Looking Glass, 7(3).
