Web Watch

August's Web Watch site, http://www.educ.kent.edu/vlo/, complements this month's focus on visual literacy. Authored by Cindy Kovalik of the University of Akron and Peggy King of the Parma City School District, Ohio, USA, the site is easily navigated and visually effective. It offers an accessible and comprehensive overview of visual literacy descriptions and definitions, as well as a series of fun, interactive lessons about perception, elements and principles for visual design and analysis, practical guidelines for visual design, and other practical exercises.

A minor caution: the site may take a bit longer to download than some because of its rich graphic content -- but it's worth the wait! K-12 and university-level teachers who wish to develop visual literacy lessons or analyze visual materials like mass media, art, or children's books will find this a great place to start.
